Jean-Marc Lafont and his wife Annick took over Domaine de Bel-Air in 1985 with a clear vision: to craft wines of outstanding quality by combining traditional winemaking expertise with modern techniques. Since 1996, Jean-Marc Lafont has also carefully selected wines from the Beaujolais and Mâconnais appellations, further expanding the estate’s range.
The vineyard is planted with vines averaging 40 years of age at a high density of 9,000 to 10,000 vines per hectare. Combined with short pruning, this planting method allows the Gamay grape to express its full potential. Since 1995, the vineyards have been managed using sustainable integrated viticulture practices, an environmentally responsible approach that promotes the production of authentic wines that faithfully reflect their terroir.
Situated on hillsides with slopes ranging from 20% to 38%, the vineyards are largely inaccessible to machinery. As a result, most vineyard work is carried out by hand, including the harvest, which is conducted manually over approximately two weeks to ensure that each plot is picked at its optimum level of ripeness.
Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately in small-capacity tanks, preserving the unique character of every terroir and producing wines of remarkable consistency and expression. The final blends are carefully crafted according to the individuality and structure of each cuvée. The estate’s only significant technological advancement is precise temperature control during fermentation, ensuring the preservation of the freshness, elegance, and distinctive aromas of each terroir.
