Château Branaire-Ducru 2020 – Saint-Julien Grand Cru Classé

A distinguished Saint-Julien red combining elegance, depth, and balance

The Estate

Classified as a Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Château Branaire-Ducru is one of the leading estates of the Saint-Julien appellation. Owned by François-Xavier Maroteaux and managed by Jean-Dominique Videau, the estate continues its long-standing tradition of excellence, producing wines renowned for their elegance, silky texture, and remarkable consistency from one vintage to the next.

The Vineyard

The vineyard extends over 60 hectares, including an additional 10 hectares acquired in 2009. The vines average 35 years of age, with some exceptional parcels dating back over a century. They are planted on Quaternary gravelly-siliceous alluvial soils, among the warmest and most prestigious terroirs of the Médoc, providing ideal conditions for late-ripening grape varieties to achieve optimal phenolic maturity.

The vineyard is planted with the classic Médoc grape varieties:

  • 70% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 22% Merlot
  • 4% Cabernet Franc
  • 4% Petit Verdot

The 2020 Vintage

The 2020 growing season began with an exceptionally mild and rainy winter, replenishing the soil's water reserves and encouraging an early budbreak. Spring continued with warm temperatures and regular rainfall, promoting healthy vine development.

Flowering took place in ideal conditions during a brief warm and dry spell in mid-May. From early summer onward, dry weather and gradually rising temperatures prevailed. The absence of rainfall and warm conditions in early September allowed the grapes to reach perfect ripeness, resulting in an outstanding harvest.

Blend

  • 58% Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 32% Merlot
  • 7% Petit Verdot
  • 3% Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes

Appearance

A deep, intense colour reflecting the concentration and quality of the vintage.

Nose

Pure and expressive, the bouquet reveals beautifully ripe black fruit aromas complemented by delicate spice notes and refreshing nuances, creating exceptional balance and aromatic complexity.

Palate

The palate opens with a smooth, generous attack, leading to a rich and fleshy mid-palate. Fine, silky tannins provide both structure and elegance, while the wine's impressive depth is perfectly balanced by freshness. The finish is remarkably long and persistent, leaving lingering notes of ripe fruit and subtle spices.
