Ardbeg Uigeadail has at least two essential characteristics: it is a blend bottled at 54.2% ABV, made from whiskies aged for at least 10 years, and is non-chill filtered. This Single Malt combines whisky matured in bourbon casks with older whisky aged in sherry casks.
The name “Uigeadail” highlights its peaty character. In Gaelic, it is the name of the loch from which the water used to produce the distillery’s malts is sourced. Already naturally peaty, the water from this small loch, located a few kilometres from the distillery, flows through peatlands, becoming further infused with the distinctive vegetal aromas of peat.
The other defining characteristic of Uigeadail reflects the high level of expertise of Ardbeg’s whisky-making team. Bringing such heavily peated malts together with the fruity notes of sherry is a delicate, even risky exercise, as these two styles are so different in aromatic character.
As reflected in the tasting notes, the result is remarkable and fascinating, with the fruitiness blending beautifully with the smoky, peaty character without ever overpowering it.
